Russia says it will help Taliban fight Islamic State in Afghanistan

Russia’s special representative for Afghanistan was cited as saying on Friday ( May 2 ) that it would assist the Taliban authorities in fighting the Afghan branch of the Islamic State.

Former Russian ambassador to Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, referred to the Islamic State Khorasan ( ISIS-K) as the” common enemy” of Moscow and Kabul.

In an interview with the RIA state media company, Kabulov stated,” We see and appreciate the work the Taliban are making in the fight against ISIS’s Afghan flap.”

” We will use specialized structures to provide our best assistance to the authorities of ( Afghanistan ).”

No nation recognizes the Taliban authorities that seized power in August 2021 as US-led makes rushed to retake control of Afghanistan following 20 years of hostility.

However, Russia recently made a step toward acknowledging the Taliban, who had been added to its record of criminal organizations in 2003.

Kabulov’s remarks highlight the remarkable resemblance between Moscow and Kabul, which President Vladimir Putin claimed was now Russia’s “allies” in the fight against violence in recent years.

Russia has been the victim of numerous Muslim State-linked problems, including the massacre of 145 individuals at a music hall outside of Moscow in March 2024, which ISIS claimed. US leaders claimed to have information that suggested ISIS-K was concerned.
