BEIJING: Heavy rain battered China’s north-eastern rust belt on Thurs (Jul 7), causing floods that stuck buses, swamped streets and disrupted commuters in cities, with additional storms forecast pertaining to coming days.
In Shenyang, capital of Liaoning province, its 7. 6 million residents were caught off-guard by the unexpectedly heavy rain even though various red alerts, the highest in a four-tier surprise warning system, were issued on Wednesday.
Residents woke up to public text messages on their mobile phones informing them to delay heading to work and call off any non-essential activities because of “extreme weather”.
Traffic police data showed 52 waterlogged parts of roads, 30 of which were closed.
Five students along with a driver were marooned in a school coach in one inundated region and had to be saved by rescuers within rubber boats, condition television reported.
From the province associated with Hebei in the north to Anhui within the east, many motorists were trapped within their cars as motors stalled on waterlogged roads, state tv footage showed recently.
In the past month, China has grappled with extreme weather from heatwaves to historic floods, along with meteorologists blaming climate change and also the first typhoon of the season, Chaba .
Notifications for flood dangers were also issued in Jilin province, north of Liaoning.
