Protesters set Sri Lankan PM's residence ablaze as unrest grows

NEW DELHI: Anti-government protesters set Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s residence on fire within Colombo on Saturday (Jul 9) as unrest grew in the united states.

A group of protesters broke into their private residence following a standoff between the protesters and security causes, local media documented.

Colombo witnessed substantial public fury upon Saturday as crowds earlier stormed Leader Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s recognized residence.

Video clips posted online demonstrated some protesters going swimming in the presidential homes pool while others acquiring selfies on Gotabaya’s bed.

The particular president had relocated to a safe location, according to reports.

Parliamentary speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said Gotabaya told him he’d resign on Wed, Sri Lankan media reported.

Market leaders of political parties in parliament in a meeting had chose to request Gotabaya and Wickremesinghe to step down.

Wickremesinghe, who became prime minister right after Gotabaya’s elder sibling Mahinda Rajapaksa retired in May, said he or she was ready to give up.

“To make sure the continuation from the government including the security of all citizens We accept the best suggestion of the party market leaders today, to make way for an all-party government. To facilitate this I will resign as best minister, ” Wickremesinghe said.
