Malaysia mulling traffic congestion charges, identifies Johor Bahru, KL, George Town for initial rollout

If a proposal for a mechanism that the federal government is now studying is approved, drivers in three main Malay cities, including Johor Bahru, may be required to pay congestion fees.

However, a Johor state government official has criticized the strategy, noting that, among other suggestions, the request may only succeed if there is a reliable public transportation system in place right away.

Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, and Penang’s George Town were named by the federal government as the three cities for an initial rollout of the proposed congestion charges on Thursday ( Feb 27 ), according to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Zaliha Mustafa on Thursday ( Feb 27 ).

The minister claimed in a statement to the legislature that the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research and the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation are also conducting research into the proposed fees.

According to the minister, preliminary findings suggest that Kuala Lumpur’s congestion charge could reduce traffic by up to 20 %, according to Malay Mail. &nbsp, &nbsp,

In response to Zaliha’s news, Johor’s Works, Transportation and Infrastructure commission president Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said that his condition is not yet available for the plan to get put into practice. &nbsp,

Johor Bahru was quoted by The Star as saying,” For the moment, we have not had a detailed people transportation masterplan.” &nbsp,

The Johor position state council member added that road users may be given “park-and-ride options” outside the central business district before a policy like that could be put into place.

Park-and-ride typically refers to a system that allows individuals to keep their cars in car parks and use public transportation to get to the city center.
