KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian specialists have rescued 15 victims of thought cybercrime rackets in Cambodia, its international ministry said, as the government steps up efforts to help hundreds of its citizens trapped by similar operations across Southeast Asia.
The recovery of the victims, exactly who arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday (Sep 20), comes among raids across Cambodia this week on cybercrime compounds suspected of trafficking people into the country to work in illegal gambling plus scam call centers.
In a declaration late Wednesday, Malaysia’s foreign ministry mentioned it had received 301 reports of people trapped by the work scam networks within Cambodia, as well as within Laos, Myanmar, plus Thailand.
Of those, 168 people have been rescued, 34 had been being held within immigration detention and 99 more had been still being followed, it said.
Victims of the rackets say they are attracted into Cambodia simply by promises of high-paying jobs at internet casinos and hotels yet were instead forced to live in compounds plus defraud online users with Internet romances and cryptocurrency schemes.
Cambodian authorities possess said they had discovered evidence of illegal betting, illegal confinement and torture, prostitution, illegal weapons possession, money laundering, and human being trafficking at among the compounds.
