Canada to impose 100% tariff on China electric vehicle imports

Following similar announcements from the US and the European Union, Canada says it will impose a 100 % import tariff on imports of Chinese-made electric vehicles ( EV ).

Additionally, the nation intends to establish a 25 % work on Chinese aluminum and steel.

Canada and its European allies accuse China of subventioning the EV sector, giving its automobile manufacturers a competitive edge.

China has called the shift” business corporatism” which “violates World Trade Organization guidelines”.

” We are transforming Canada’s automotive industry to be a world leader in building the cars of tomorrow, but players like China have chosen to give themselves an unfair advantages in the world marketplace,” said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Canada’s duties on Chinese Batteries are due to come into effect on 1 October, while those on steel and metal may be implemented from 15 October.

The US announced in May that it would double its tariffs on Chinese EV goods to 100 %.

The EU followed that with announcing plans to levy duties on China-made Batteries of up to 36.3 %.

Tesla’s Shanghai stock will also be subject to tariffs from Canada on Foreign electric vehicles.

Foreign car manufacturers are still not a common view in Canada but some, like BYD, have taken steps to provide the government’s business.

US soldier who fled to North Korea to plead guilty to desertion

Travis King, a US man who fled South to North Korea before being taken back home, likely enter a guilty plea to abandonment and other charges, according to his attorney.

In July 2023, the troops filed 14 claims against Mr. King for the illegal cross. He plans to enter a guilty plea to five charges, including abandonment and abuse, as part of a petition deal.

His attorney Franklin Rosenblatt stated in a speech to BBC News that “he will plead not guilty to the remaining acts, which the Army did retreat and dismiss.”

On September 20th, a military center in Fort Bliss, Texas will host his petition and sentencing hearing.

” Travis’s guilty plea may be entered at a public court-martial”, Mr Rosenblatt said in an emailed statement on Monday.

” That, he will explain what he did, reply a military court’s questions about why he is pleading guilty, and been sentenced”.

Mr King is glad to help from his family and friends and to all those who did no “pre-judge” him based on the complaints, the prosecutor added.

Ownership of child pornography is among the fees that are anticipated to be dropped as part of the plea bargain.

Limited. King has served in the army since January 2021 when he entered North Korea on a product rotation.

Therefore, both the reasons for leaving and returning to other countries are fundamentally different. A lot of young Singaporeans might choose to live and work overseas for reasons like exposure, ( seeking ) adventure, experience or even career progression.

So these are generally temporary and there’s a defined return program, whereas for pensions, the time frame is frequently long-term and it’s endless. It might be as a result of lower life costs… A client and I have a client who wants to live in a place where the temperature is more livable ( in the ) long term because of global warming. Or if our kids migrate, we might choose to ( be ) near them.

So the motivations (are ) different to start of. The amount of planning needed is also unique. Because when we are (young and ) living abroad, we are able to function. Dementia in women: Why being female puts you at higher risk of getting this debilitating illness

DEMENTIA RISK: A LONGER LIFESPAN AND MENOPAUSE

” Age is one of the biggest risk factors contributing to dementia”, said Dr Hung. We are more likely to reach the age where the risk of memory is higher because women typically live longer.

Dr. Zhao added that a risk factor is also the menopausal estrogen levels ‘ drop. These physiological changes may contribute to the process that leads to Alzheimer’s disease.

However, the risk of cardiovascular disease increases in people post-menopause, which can also raise the risk of dementia, said Dr Chan Wan Xian, a physician at Mount Elizabeth Hospital.

DEMENTIA RISK: HEART DISEASE, HYPERTENSION AND DIABETES

Dr Chan said cardiovascular condition, which is the most common cause of death among people in Singapore, also increases their risk of dementia.

A long-term study that was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association in 2013 discovered that adult heart attack victims were twice as likely to experience a decrease in memory and thinking.

HDB’s lease buyback scheme still relevant even amid rising resale prices, analysts say

The Housing and Development Board ( HDB)’s ( HDB) Lease Buyback Scheme is still applicable despite the booming resale market, where flat prices have increased steadily, according to analysts.

Specifically, it offers the option of “flexibility” to those who wish to time in their own houses but need extra money for their retirement nest egg, they added.

The program, which was introduced in 2009, allows people over 65 to market a portion of their apartment’s contract back to HDB.

Those who qualify have the option of choosing to keep their leases, which run from 15 to 35 years, depending on their age and wants, as long as the youngest user of the apartment is still under 95 years old. &nbsp,

The proceeds from the sale will be used to fund the purchase of a CPF Life plan with monthly payments for life and to top up their Central Provident Fund ( CPF ) retirement account. Any surplus left over from the retirement account top-up may be given back in income to the home owners.

As of Jun 30, 12, 656 households have sold part of their flat’s remaining lease back to HDB, with nine in 10 receiving between&nbsp, S$ 100, 000 ( US$ 75, 500 ) and S$ 300, 000.

Online users questioned whether it makes sense for elders to do this, especially with rising home prices. If seniors downsize and sell their apartments in favor of smaller homes instead of cashing in?

According to CNA spokespeople, the plan was created to address the needs of a particular class of apartment entrepreneurs, who want to live in place.

This affects how well one interprets an HDB level: is it an investment or a home I hope to live in until they pass away? said Christopher Gee, IPS assistant director.

” If we think about it as more the latter, the issue of whether I should sell because it’s now valued more does n’t apply. You will no longer be able to reside there because of it’s sale.

More importantly, it offers home users the ability to “decide how many cash” they want to increase with the commodity they own.

Commentary: I’m dying. It’s okay if friends don’t know how to be there for me – just be there

They set aside&nbsp, the mental capacity, time and resources to help a friend in need- to get current, to hold nervous conversations about the transitory nature of life, and to also find joy in these shared moments.

At a time when everyone is stricken with their own wants, it’s about what we are willing to give of ourselves. I notice how many my companions have sacrificed for me and how they have no expectations of what they can receive.

I now have a newfound appreciation for the saying,” To live is to provide, and to offer is to live”. Despite my natural limitations, I have discovered that I too, is also give- through my words, my existence and my experiences. And in giving, I find a renewed sense of purpose.

Yet as my real world drastically shrinks, my condition has opened up new friendships and renewed old people.

PRIVILEGE IN CRISIS

For me, this is how you can be a companion to someone in their final stages of life: Use your potential to be present, your capacity for risk, and your product of time to develop deeper and more important connections. Do as much as you can to perform the smallest acts of compassion.

I am aware that you may be experiencing difficulty or facing your own challenges, friends who have n’t had the ability to reach out. I’m hoping you’ll get past them, and I’m eager to see you immediately. &nbsp,

What ultimately things may just be how seriously we allow ourselves to interact with one another. I have strong social networks, the ability to manage high-quality care, and the ability to transition from a simple life function to a more fulfilling existence while I can.

Laila Majnu, Manichitrathazhu: Indians flock to cinemas to watch older films

When Zakia Rafiqi, 26, heard that Laila Majnu, a 2018 Bollywood film, was being re-released in theaters this month, she knew she had to watch it repeatedly.

” In 2018, I was among a handful of people in the theater. This day, there were many more people. A lot of them were laughing and crying”, says Ms Rafiqi, who went with her girlfriend to a theatre in Delhi.

Ms Rafiqi says she has an “emotional connect” with the picture, a tragic love story set in Indian-administered Kashmir, where she is from.

” It’s great to see a bit of home on the big screen. When they are driving through the roads of Kashmir, you feel you are there”, she says.

Imtiaz Ali’s film Laila Majnu, which was written by famous filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, did well at the box office on its second run, but it did poorly on its first. It is one of dozens of American movies, some of which were produced more than 20 years ago, gaining new career as viewers clamor to see them on the big screen.

India’s film industry, like others across the world, has seen ups and downs since the coronavirus pandemic shuttered cinemas for months and led many to turn to streaming services. It is yet to return to its former glory.

” This year has been particularly bad for new]Bollywood ] releases”, says trade analyst Komal Nahta.

Bollywood, which is dominated by Hindi-language talent, is presently producing more movies, but it’s common to hear people say they’ll wait for a movie to stream on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video rather than go to the movies.

Some films do break through – Stree 2, a Hindi horror-comedy currently playing in cinemas, has earned close to four billion rupees ($47.6m; £36.1m) domestically so far to become the year’s biggest Bollywood hit. In terms of overall earnings, it is second only to Kalki 2898 AD, a “pan-Indian” film which featured some of the country’s biggest stars. Bollywood re-releases from various disciplines this time. With the release of action thrillers Main Khiladi Tu Anari and Baazigar, much-loved rom-comedies Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Hum Aapke Hain Koun, 1990s seem to be a favorite generation. More recent hits- musical Rockstar ( 2011 ), buddy film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara ( 2011 ) and rom-com Jab We Met ( 2007 )- have also brought people back to cinemas.

Analysts say the biggest surprise was the success of Laila Majnu. The film’s makers have said they were particularly happy that viewers in Kashmir could watch it as cinema halls reopened there in 2022 after more than two decades.

According to Mr. Nahta,” The picture has suddenly recovered its price or at least minimized its losses.” He also says that this will encourage others to check whether their movies may benefit from a re-release.

Taran Adarsh, a Bollywood researcher, says these re-releases are making up for a lack of new pictures and lacklustre box-office shows.

Posters just appear on solution booking websites or go viral on social media during the re-releases, which have little to no promotion. ” It’s driven solely by nostalgia or an audience’s like for a movie that already has a religion following”, says Mr Adarsh.

In Tamil and Telugu, the re-releases have been more star-driven. Followers of Telugu singer Chiranjeevi are seen dancing to a popular song from his 2002 film Indra in new videos. Pawan Kalyan’s Gabbar Singh ( 2012 ) is set to release next week. In Tamil, Vijay’s Ghilli ( 2004 ) ran to packed halls in April.

According to Sreedhar Pillai, an researcher who tracks the southern film companies, “it’s typically the movie of a singer whose celebrity may have just been rising 20 years earlier or a movie that was already a struck.” It must be motivated by memories and a link to an professional who is a household name today.
