NEW STRENGTHS TO START RESEARCH Initiatives
Additionally, Mr. Heng, who serves on the National Research Foundation and the Future Economy Advisory Panel, made two significant new initiatives for the Research, Innovation and Enterprise ( RIE ) sector from 2026 to 2030.
The first is on applying artificial intelligence ( AI ) in priority sectors such as healthcare, education, finance, advanced manufacturing, connectivity, logistics and transport, he said.
A S$ 120 million AI for Science initiative was launched in October to assist scientists in tapping into AI in areas like developed supplies and medical science, according to Mr. Heng.
” Applied AI sits at the crossroads of domain knowledge and AI. Building on the solid domain expertise of our practitioners and researchers in healthcare, education, finance, engineering and many others, we will spend more in developing’ bilingual’ medical talent, researchers who may bridge between Artificial technologies and domain expertise”, he said.
Additionally, RIE Flagships and RIE Grand Challenges, two fresh, extensive research and development initiatives, will be launched.
RIE Grand Challenges may address national strategic priorities, while RIE Flagships may concentrate efforts on pressing financial issues.
” These Flagships and Grand Challenges will bring up relevant research and clinical capabilities from our universities, A*STAR and additional research institutes, people agencies, and personal sector players,” said Mr. Heng,” to create a suite of consciously coordinated and synergistic programs.”
” The linkages between research, translation and commercialisation will be tightened, to advance key economic areas, produce new products and companies, and address real-world needs and problems”.
