Singapore is experiencing a COVID- 19 flood, with a new tripling of cases month- on- year.
The estimated amount of COVID- 19 infection in the week of May 5 to 11 grew to 25, 900 – a 90 per cent increase compared with the 13, 700 cases in the week before that.  ,
The regular routine COVID- 19 hospitalisations even increased to about 250 from 181 the week before, said the Health Ministry on Saturday. According to the report, the typical daily cases in intensive care are still at three cases, down from two cases in the previous year.
Now, two- tenths of Singapore’s cases are caused by the KP. 1 and KP. 2 strain of the virus.
The Health Ministry said on May 18 that there are  , no evidence that KP. 1 and KP. 2 are more transmissible or lead to more serious illness than other circulating varieties.
Although no studies have been done on the effectiveness of existing vaccines against more recent variants, scientists believe that getting vaccine is still the best option, especially for severe illnesses.
” We strongly believe that the vaccination is also effective in preventing serious diseases like hospitalization and death,” said Dr. Leong Hoe Nam, an expert in infectious diseases at Rophi Clinic in Singapore.
He even explained that COVID- 19 test products are able to detect , the KP. 1 and KP. 2 variations.
” The COVID- 19 evaluation system tests against the N proteins. However, Dr. Leong claimed that the spike protein is primarily responsible for the gene of the KP varieties.
” In truth, the N protein has been constantly stable since the beginning with just minor changes,” he said.
